Dragon Wins in Avalon Park

Avalon Park, Florida- East Orlando tennis players got a chance to get some local competition on Sunday August 11. Florida Tennis Tour (FTT) promoter and WSA (World Sports Alumni) CEO Charlie " Dragon" Williams organized a friendly neighborhood round robin prize money event for 3.5 level to 4.5 level players to encourage more singles action in the area. In doing so, he actually won his own inaugural event.

"I know a lot of players in the area like myself who have a hard time getting a singles match. And it gets boring playing the same players over and over, so I thought getting a frequent round robin tournament going would be fun and motivate more singles play for our level", explained Williams, a former #1 Pro Billiards Champion who is nicknamed The Korean Dragon or Dragon in his tour days. Williams owns a marketing company Orlando Synergy Marketing, an events production company Dragon Promotions, and has organized televised events worldwide including ESPN, EuroSport, ESPN Asia, ABS-CBN Philippines, MBC Korea, CJ Media Korea. "These are just small neighborhood competitions that we can get done in 3-4 hours with a little prize money to add motivation. And like everything I do, I mean to put a lot of eyeballs and spotlight on the players and the action!"

The round robin format are 6 game pro-sets with no ads played. Tie-break at 5-5. Players are divided into groups of 3. The top #1 in each group with the best record moves onto play the finals. The #2s in each group play for 3rd place while the remainder face-off for consolation matches. The top 3 places are paid prize money depending on the amount of players and every player will receive ranking points.

The first event saw the hard hitting Parel Brothers Bucky and Zip face-off. Both teens play for East River Highschool as the #2 and #1 line respectively. The younger of the two, Zip, handed his brother Bucky a 6-2 loss. Bucky in an earlier match jumped to a 2-0 lead over Williams, but Williams came back with 5 consecutive games to eventually win 6-3.

The finals pitted 16 year old Zip,who has an outstanding kick serve, against the 42 year old Williams who runs pretty fast for his age. Zip took the first game while Williams took the next. Zip took the third game and the duel was in motion as Williams took game #4 and #5. Williams led 3-2 in a tight contest but Zip had to withdraw due to a nagging back pain.
